A green living roof, floor to ceiling pocketing glass doors, and stone that seamlessly transitions from interior to exterior spaces gives new meaning to the ‘indoor/outdoor living’ concept. Careful consideration was given to site placement in order to capture the best view from the street approach, optimal sun for living roofs and solar panels, and placement of a large pool and tennis court. In addition to restoring the existing property, a new modern 1,500 SF addition was conceived off of the rear of the home. Each original architectural detail was painstakingly recreated, from the exterior shutters and clay tiled roof down to the interior scalloped crown molding. Our client wanted something that could cross the boundary of traditional, as expected in Eastover, Charlotte, yet contemporary in the way their home lives and feels. They wanted something unique with a cottage look to fit the streetscape. However, the program for this growing family demanded far more than a simple small cottage. The solution was a home that was scaled appropriately and comfortable, as you would expect in the south. The larger swooping front gable and wing wall to the auto court concealed the larger mass of the home in the background. We wanted to maintain a regional reference in the architectural language as well. Knowing that our client had close southern roots, we felt that it was important to create that emotional connection. The culmination of the design process led to this effortless, open plan with southern charm. Over years, we expect the aged cedar wood roof to patina, and the carefully planned landscape(by Bruce Clodfelter, LA) to mature in place as if this home was here for an unknown time. The contrast of aged exteriors with expansive windows and daylit open rooms fit with the story and personality of the new homeowners. In general about the project... We are always exploring ways to redefine our local vernacular through contemporary designs that are of this place, of this region. Our client also wanted to break the mold of traditional expectations here in Charlotte, so it was a perfect match. They wanted something unique and contemporary. On the other hand they wanted a home that was scaled appropriately and comfortable, like you would expect in the south. We wanted to maintain a regional reference in the architectural language. Knowing that our client had close agricultural roots, growing up on a farm etc., we felt that it was important to create that emotional connection to this past. The culmination of the design process led to a simple, knife edge gable structure that is reminiscent of rural barns. Over years, we expect the aged cedar strip wood cladding on the front gable to patina, to a weathered old barn hue.
